High-Definition Multimedia Interface or HDMI highspeed cables transfer audio and video data between a source device and display devices like computer monitors, video projectors, digital televisions and audio devices, and computers and mobile devices. They essentially provide the information that makes our iPhones and iPads such handy little marvels. Not all HDMI highspeed cables are created equal, however, and quality always matters.

HDMI highspeed cables are the workhorses of the internet
HDMI cables are in a way the unsung heroes of the Internet age. Without HDMI and fiber optic cables, the Internet as we know it would not exist. Nor would our mobile devices, on which we have come to depend for our everyday existence.
HDMI highspeed cables are the workhorses carrying audio and video information at lightning speeds to give us the convenience of the Internet and of being able to do almost anything online. HDMI cables come in two types: standard and highspeed.

Category 5 and 6 cables: the new generation
HDMI highspeed cables are classified according to the speed with which they transmit data and the frequencies in which they operate. The new generation of cables transmit data at rates that were unimaginable even a few years ago.

  • Category 5 or Cat 5 cables have a maximum frequency of 100 MHz and transmit data at the rate of 10/100Mbps.
  • Cat 5e cables: maximum frequency 100 MHz and the rate of data transmission is up to 10/100/1000Mbps.
  • Cat 6a: maximum frequency 500 MHz and data transmission rates up to10/100/1000Mbps and 10Gbps.

Cat 5 and 5e are used for networks and multi-line phone systems. Cat 6a cables are used for networks.

Quality matters
The quality of highspeed HDMI cables depends on the materials used. Depending on quality, good HDMI highspeed cables can last for a long time. For instance, a CAT 5 cable made from top quality materials lasts for 5 to 10 years. While quality matters, length does not. Unless the cable is being used over great distances, its length does not affect the quality of the video or audio. When cables are needed to cover distances of 100 feet or more, specially designed cables should be used.
For government contractors, IT professionals, home theater installers, and DIY-er network installers, high quality cables HDMI and USB cables can make all the difference.

However, you don’t have to pay more for top quality HDMI cables. Buying cables online can give you a better price than you would find in stores, and comparable or better quality. They also come with strong warranties and follow-up service.
